The cosmopolitan, student-friendly culture of Brighton, England make it the perfect place to find vegetarian restaurants and cafes. Below you will find a selection of the best cruelty-free fare in London-By-The-Sea.
Terre A Terre - 71 East Street, Brighton BN1 1HQ. Tel (00 44) 1273 729051
Leading the pack is the ultra chic Terre a Terre. Although literally meaning 'earth to earth', this is about as far as you can get from hippies serving up lentil bakes and peppermint tea. Nestled in the heart of the fashionable Lanes shopping area, its trendy, modern decor is not let down by the excellent cuisine on offer. With vegan and gluten- free options available, it is the perfect place to entertain even the faddiest eater in style. Advance booking is usually essential.
Food For Friends - 17-18 Prince Albert Street, Brighton BN1 1HF. Tel (00 44) 1273 202310
Originally very much a down-to-earth canteen, Food For Friends updated its image a few years ago and now offers a stylish environment where you can enjoy tasty and attractive vegatarian fare. Vegan and gluten-free options available. Main courses from £8.95. Food For Friends is also in the Lanes and so on the doorstep of a whole range of shops.
Strictly speaking a pub, The George has an exclusively vegetarian menu with the emphasis on hearty dishes such as vegetarian sausages and mash. A fiveminute walk from the train station.
Sanctuary Cafe - 51-55 Brunswick Street East, Brighton BN3 1AU. Tel (00 44) 12734 770002
A bright, cheerful and relaxing cafe that opens from 9am until 11pm - perfect for meeting up for a bite to eat, day or night. Although not quite so central as Terre A Terre or Food For Friends, the Sanctuary is only a short walk from the beach. The basement bar regularly plays host to a wide range of local musicians, poets and writers. Not strictly one hundred percent vegetarian as it also serves seafood.
Red Veg - 21 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UP. Tel (00 44) 679910
This take away is perfect if you need a bite to eat on the go. Express fare such as veggie burgers, potato skins etc but very tasty and at very reasonable prices. Right in the heart of the more bohemian North Laine area and a stones' throw from the Komedia theatre and comedy showcase.
NB Don't get the cafe confused with the health food shop nearby at 25 North Road. A stones' throw from Red Veg, this is a more pricey option. However, Infinity is a cafe rather than a take away, and an organic one at that. Although some of the prices belong more ina restaurant than a cafe, the generous portions of healthy and tasty food do seem worth it when you are shopping til you are dropping. The mezze plate (falafel, salad, humous, pitta) is particularly delicious. Eat at an upstairs window seat and watch the world go by.
The proliferation of high quality vegetarian and vegan eateries has had an effect on many of the restaurants and cafes in Brighton - depending on which part of the city you are in, it is not hard to find soyacinnos (capucinnos made with soya milk) or vegan dishes in non-vegetarian restaurants and cafes.
